Virtual office in Portugal: 5 essential questions before you sign up (2026)
Updated October 2026
Thinking about getting a virtual office in Portugal, but still unsure what it is, what it includes and whether it works as your company’s registered office? We have gathered the 5 essential questions we are asked most often, with straight answers and the official rules. At Giraldo Works, the virtual office is on Rua Castilho, next to Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, from €20/month + VAT, with no sign-up fee.
In short
- What it is: a service that gives your company a professional address without renting physical space.
- Registered office and tax address: the virtual office address can be your company’s registered office, as long as the provider authorises it in writing.
- What it includes: the address, mail handling, mail digitalization and access to meeting rooms, depending on the plan.
- Price: €20, €30 or €70/month + VAT on the annual plan, or €25, €35 or €85/month + VAT on the monthly plan. No sign-up fee.
- Who it is for: freelancers, startups, companies that don’t need physical space, foreign companies, branches and non-residents.
1. What is a virtual office and how is it different from a traditional office?
The big difference is that with a virtual office you stop renting a space and start paying for a service. Your company gets a professional address that you can use as your registered office, on your website, invoices and contracts, but you don’t have a fixed workstation there. Your team works wherever it likes and uses the meeting rooms when it needs to meet clients.
| Virtual office | Traditional office | |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay | A monthly service | Rent, fit-out, furniture and running costs |
| Registered office address | Yes | Yes |
| Fixed workspace | No (meeting rooms when you need them) | Yes |
| Commitment | Monthly or annual plan | Usually long leases |
If you need somewhere to work every day, the alternative is coworking or a private office. We explain the differences in our article coworking vs virtual office: differences, prices and which to choose.
2. With a virtual office, does your company still have a registered office and tax address?
Yes. Every Portuguese company must have a registered office, and that is exactly what a virtual office provides. Article 12 of the Portuguese Companies Code requires the registered office to be at a “specifically defined place”, and justica.gov.pt states that it must be in Portugal but does not have to be where the company actually operates.
For tax purposes, article 19 of the General Tax Law says a company’s tax domicile is, as a rule, its registered office. In other words, the virtual office address also becomes the company’s tax address.
What matters is that the address is specific and that the provider authorises its use as a registered office in writing. We explain the differences between these concepts in our article tax address vs registered office vs virtual address, and why a PO box won’t do in can you use a PO box as your company’s registered office?
3. What services does a virtual office include?
It depends on the provider and the plan. At Giraldo Works, these are the services:
| Plan | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Basic | Company address on Rua Castilho and mail handling |
| Premium | Basic + mail digitalization + meeting rooms at €8/hour + VAT |
| Premium Plus | Company address, mail handling and digitalization, 2 hours of meeting room per month and general telephone service |
The meeting rooms are in the same building, next to Avenida da Liberdade. If you are comparing cheaper offers, see our list of what should always be included in low-cost virtual office: what it should include.
4. How much does a virtual office cost and how do you pay?
In Lisbon, prices vary a lot between providers and areas. At Giraldo Works you can choose between the annual plan, paid upfront, and the monthly plan:
| Plan | Annual plan (paid upfront) | Monthly plan |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | €20/month | €25/month |
| Premium | €30/month | €35/month |
| Premium Plus | €70/month | €85/month |
VAT is added at the applicable legal rate. No sign-up fee. The annual plan has a 12-month minimum term.

5. Who is a virtual office for?
Any company or professional can have a virtual office, but some profiles get more out of it:
- Freelancers and self-employed professionals: a professional address for their website and clients, without using their home address.
- Startups: they avoid rent, fit-out and furniture at a stage when every euro counts, while keeping a credible address.
- Companies that don’t need physical space: remote teams or online businesses that only need a registered office and the occasional meeting room.
- Companies that want a Lisbon address: for example, to move their registered office to the capital. We explain the steps in how to move your company’s registered office to Lisbon.
- Foreign companies, branches and non-residents: they can also sign up for the Giraldo Works virtual office. See our guide Portugal address for foreign companies and non-residents.
To sign up, all you need is the ID of the company’s representative or of the applicant. We don’t charge a sign-up fee.
Frequently asked questions
Is a virtual office legal in Portugal?
Yes. The law requires the registered office to be at a specifically defined place in Portugal, but not that it is where the company works. A virtual office address, authorised in writing by the provider, meets that rule.
Can I register my company's registered office at the virtual office address?
Yes. At Giraldo Works, the Rua Castilho address next to Avenida da Liberdade can be used as your company’s registered office and tax address on every plan.
What is the difference between a virtual office and company domiciliation?
In practice, they are different names for the same core service: an address for the company’s registered office. A virtual office usually adds other services, such as mail handling, mail digitalization and meeting rooms.
Is there a sign-up fee?
No. Giraldo Works doesn’t charge a sign-up fee. You only pay for the plan you choose: €20, €30 or €70/month + VAT on the annual plan, or €25, €35 or €85/month + VAT on the monthly plan.
Can non-residents and foreign companies sign up?
Yes. Non-residents, foreign companies and branches can sign up for the Giraldo Works virtual office. All you need is the ID of the company’s representative or of the applicant.
Can I meet clients at the virtual office address?
Yes, in the meeting rooms in the same building. On the Premium plan they cost €8/hour + VAT, and Premium Plus includes 2 hours of meeting room per month.
